Birmingham St. Mary's Hospice, Selly Park, B'ham, B29 7DA

The founding philosophy of Birmingham St. Mary's Hospice is that good palliative care provides relief from physical, social and psycho-spiritual distress; the Hospice exists to provide such care for those in need and support to the people who care for them.

St Mary's admitted its first patients in 1979 and since then has cared for many thousands of Birmingham people either in the Hospice of in their own homes. In 1999, following a successful capital appeal to pay for much needed extensions and refurbishment, the name of our city was added to the name of the Hospice. This both emphasises the unique role played by St Mary's in Birmingham and acknowledges the generous support given by the city's people to their Hospice.

We have 27 inpatient beds, 13 single en-suite rooms and the rest in small multi-bedded wards. There is also a self-contained family flat which enables a patient and his or her relatives to stay together. Care is given by a team of professional, experienced medical and nursing staff, occupational and physio-therapists, counselor/social workers and chaplains. The centre also provides daycare, a relaxed friendly setting in which nursing and other practical care and advice is offered to patients; it also enables carers to enjoy much needed respite. Other services offered include that of Homecare, Support for Relatives and Carers. The Hospice offers training and education programmes to Hospice staff and to other healthcare workers from a range of settings.

The Hospice is an independent, self-financing charity which depends on voluntary donations to sustain the range of essential services. Grants received from local health authorities cover less than one-third of our expenditure

Dentaid U.K.

Dentaid was set up as a registered charity in the UK in 1996, and is currently seeking registration in the US. IT followed two years or so of ad-hoc collection of dental equipment as part of an aid package to prison camps in the Ukraine, put together by Hope Now International Ministries.

Now independent, Dentaid is helping to bring relief to thousands of children and adults in the least developed countries of the world where tooth decay is rife, abscesses can cause death, and do-it-yourself extractions are commonplace. Trustees of the charity are working dentists and engineers. Dentaid is working to match the needs of dentists, hospitals and clinics in those countries with the availability of unwanted, good quality dental surgeries and instruments from the west. Dental equipment, that has been donated by dentists in the UK is refurbished in the Dentaid workshops and then given to dentists and hospitals who desperately need it overseas.

Many dentists and other individuals volunteer to work overseas for various time periods to assess projects, teach infection control methods, train local dentists, assist in setting up dental clinics in remote areas, and provide dental services to those who need it. Dentaid's international work is already gaining wide recognition and is being encouraged by organisations such as the British Dental Association and the British Dental Trade Association. Dentaid is also gaining support from the voluntary sector.

Currently Dentaid is supporting oral health projects and initiatives in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. For more information visit their homepage.
